Thomas E. Wagner, D.D.S., '52 Memorial Scholarship Endowment

The Thomas E. Wagner, D.D.S., ’52 Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 2015. The purpose of the fund is to provide endowed support for scholarships for students who demonstrate financial need and who are legally married while attending the School.

The fund was established by Julia W. Llewellyn, RDH, ‘72, DDS, ’80 and her husband, Richard E. Llewellyn, in memory of Julia’s father, Thomas E. Wagner, DDS (February 6, 1926-June 20, 2015). Dr. Wagner was a 1952 graduate of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, now known as the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. While a student, he worked multiple jobs and long hours, along with his wife, Betty H. Wagner, to support his family and pay for school. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and following graduation, Dr. Wagner served in the United States Air Force Dental Corps for three years. After completing his service, he was recruited by a local physician to a small town in Southern Maryland, where he opened a private dental practice. He practiced General Dentistry for 40 years, and sold his practice to another School graduate. Much loved by his patients, he was a quiet, kind, gentle person with a wonderful sense of humor, willing to accept his patients’ fresh produce or harvested seafood as a trade for dental treatment from those who couldn’t pay “the normal way” in their times of need.
