Osborne Scholarship Endowment

The purpose of the fund is to provide tuition support and stipends through a competitive merit scholars program for students selected to be “Osborne Scholars” and enrolled as full-time day students at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. A student chosen by the School as an Osborne Scholar must meet the following criteria at the time of selection:

(a) Each Osborne Scholar will be a “nontraditional student” in that he or she was engaged in a professional career at the time of application to the School. A letter of recommendation from a current or former employer will be required for an admitted student to receive Support.

(b) Each Osborne Scholar will have a background that exhibits leadership in his/her career and a history of community service.

© Each Osborne Scholar will have financial need. The scholarship is not need-based, but rather need-driven, meaning the scholarship will provide the student the opportunity, and the student is expected to take advantage of the opportunity, to attend the School full-time and participate in non-academic activities available to School students.

(d) Each Osborne Scholar will demonstrate academic promise and a stated interest in pursuing a career in private legal practice or business. It is the Donors’ intent that these terms be interpreted broadly to include business, financial, commercial and legal related activities in government, health, or the private sector.

While it is the Donors’ desire that the income from the Endowment be used to provide a full-tuition scholarship plus a stipend for a student classified either as Maryland resident or non-resident for tuition purposes, the Donors acknowledge that the Endowment may not be sufficient initially to provide the desired funding. At the Dean of the School’s discretion, the Support may be supplemented by the School to provide for a full-tuition scholarship plus a stipend.

Each Osborne Scholar will be expected to be a full time day student who participates in a meaningful way in the life of the School in activities such as oral advocacy competitions and organizations, scholarly journals, and/or other registered student organizations, and to be in a leadership role in such organization by the third year of law school.
