James R. Swancar, D.D.S. Memorial Scholarship Endowment

The James R. Swancar, D.D.S. Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 2015. The purpose of the fund is to provide endowed scholarship support for students enrolled in the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, with preference given to students who are from New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont). Determination of residency will be based on the home address provided by students upon application to their college or university attended first following secondary school. A scholarship recipient may be classified as in-state or out-of-state for purpose of determining Dental School tuition and is eligible to receive the scholarship for as long as they are enrolled at the School and meet the academic achievement requirement.

Richard S. Sewall, D.D.S. ’76 and his wife, Gwyn Sewall (“Donors”) established the Fund in memory of James R. Swancar, D.D.S., a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry from 1970 to 1996. During his tenure at the School, Dr. Swancar served as head of the Accelerated Professional Training Program, a program that condensed the four year program into three years for qualified students, Acting Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and Acting Chair of the Oral Pathology Program."
